Food Security FOR CHILDREN AT RISK
Why?
As of May 2024, the minimum monthly wage was equivalent to $3.56, and the average monthly salary was around $100, while the basic monthly food basket amounted to around $500. Food remains scarce for 41.9% of the population with a significant impact on children’s nutrition. Nearly 69,9%% of Venezuelans live in poverty*. The situation is also aggravated by fuel costs, and scarcity of electricity and drinking water. CARITAS reported 26% of malnourishment in children below 5 years old.
How have we helped
Since 2018, Healing Venezuela has been providing two meals and a healthy snack a day for children at risk of malnutrition in impoverished areas of Caracas and a village in Sucre State called Guaraunos. More than 300 children and their families have benefited from this programme with the added benefit that, as it runs in school premises, attendance has increased remarkably. To date, we have delivered + 460,000 meals to children at risk reducing malnutrition to 5% in the areas where we operate.
